Our next show at The FP3 Gallery welcomes local South End artist, Phillip Spinks. His show opens on January 18th, and a reception with the artist will take place on Thursday, February 2nd, from 6-8pm in The FP3 Gallery at FP3 Boston.

Phillip is best known for his abstract multi-layered paintings and has most recently found inspiration in what is lost or has been destroyed only to create new meaning in what remains. Hurricane Katrina, for example, has played a moving and inspirational influence on his recent work. Other influences are distilled from his sense of self, based on a southern heritage enhanced by his many travels and the cultures both urban and rural, which he has encountered. This history invoked with a vivid imagination creates images hauntingly surreal, yet vaguely familiar in the recesses of our primal memories.

He has been in numerous juried exhibitions throughout the US and his work is also in many private and public collections in Boston and beyond.

A bit more about Phillip Spinks now exhibiting at the FP3 Gallery:

Phillip Spinks was born in Nurnburg, West Germany in 1972, and he has lived throughout the United States and Europe, from the mountainous deserts of the southwest to the Mississippi Gulf Coast and from deep in the Bavarian forests to Colonial New England. He studied engineering, creative writing and archaeology at Boston University.

He’s been a painter and printmaker living and working in Boston for more than ten years. He has his work in many public and private collections such as Merck & Co., Children’s Hospital and the Beal Corporation, and he’s been in numerous juried exhibitions and has shown throughout the United States and Germany.

His current body of work is about taking what is lost or destroyed and creating new meanings as well as anchoring what remains.

On August 29, 2005 Hurricane Katrina struck both New Orleans and the Mississippi Gulf coast. His parents’ and his grandmother’s homes were gutted by the storm surge of Katrina. Anything below three and a half feet was buried in sediment and debris. Ninety percent of his family photographs were completely destroyed. As his parents and he sifted through what was left of their home, they found items of their recent past. Broken china, splintered chairs, clothing and images lost in frames, melted by the ravages of the storm. What remained were fragments of memories, a face here, an arm draped over a shoulder, the edge of a building.

After smell, sight is the strongest sense linked to memory. Looking through photo albums and frames, the images both lost their meaning and sparked moments in times remembered.

He saw the austere beauty in the imagery that remained, and as opposed to allowing the loss of the images to create a void in his mind, he chose to reclaim these memories and create a new vehicle to contain them. This body of work is titled Recovering Memories.

For the imagery Beck produces as an artist, she conducted extensive research in Niger, West Africa where she lived and traveled for many years. Her art involves the study of different aspects of the Nigerien landscape, the Djarma and Fulani cultures and the art forms they create. Through this study, she’s been committed to the advancement of abstraction, portraying concepts of ritual and tradition within the social structure of Nigerien culture.

The titles of Beck’s images and exhibitions are presented in the Djarma language. The Djarma people speak Djarma in Niger, West Africa. The titles she uses refer to different modes of expression, as well as the colorful and vibrant parts of the Nigerien culture. The titles give her imagery a sense of texture that allows the viewer to contemplate a possible meaning of the words in relation to the art she creates.

Beck’s drawings, paintings and mixed-media have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions at galleries throughout the United States and abroad including Paris, France; Liverpool, England; London, England; Cardiff, Wales and, of course, Niger, West Africa.

Beck served as Professor of Art, Chair of the Art Department and was a faculty member at Concordia University in Irvine, CA for eleven years. There, she taught art honors, design, drawing, painting, printmaking and a senior art seminar. Her education combines the teaching of form in relation to content and her students are encouraged to develop distinct artistic methods through art history, field research and extensive travel.

The FP3 gallery is pleased to present “AQUATIC,” a new exhibit featuring artists Lora Brody, William Hamlin, and Thom Lussier. The exhibit, a collaborative show with The Schoolhouse Gallery in Provincetown, begins this Thursday, July 14th and runs until September 28th. The artists featured have each utilized water as the subject or source in distinct ways for their work.

LORA BRODY is an award-winning Boston and Provincetown-based photographer best known for her “Pinhole” photographs of swimmers. She uses a Nikon SLR camera fitted with a pinhole cap to capture images of bodies moving through water. Her photos have appeared on the cover and in feature articles in The Boston Globe Sunday Magazine, The Cape Cod Times, Cape Cod Magazine, Woman’s Day and Cooking Light.

WILLIAM HAMLIN created his unique style of photography through the study of both photography and art history at NYU. Hamlin formed his own technique – the woven photograph – after he created a series of collages in the style of David Hockney and a series of photographic extensions inspired by Lucas Samaras. Hamlin has received numerous awards and has been featured in many exhibitions throughout the Northeast. For this exhibition Hamlin presents a series of woven photographs of tiled swimming pools.

THOM LUSSIER is a graduate of Massachusetts College of Art (BFA, photography) and received his Master’s from Yale University (MFA, photography). Lussier has worked with a large panoramic camera for many years. His work for this exhibition is a set of images from a series titled “Underneath.” The images are not digitally altered in any way and are featured in suspended shadow boxes in order to preserve the fluidity of the material on which they’re printed. Lussier’s work has been exhibited all over the world – New York, Los Angeles, Paris, Berlin, Milan, and London… And now, Boston!

Visit FP3 this Thursday evening for an artist’s reception between 6-8 pm and enjoy this amazing new exhibit, a great way to spend a summer evening.

There was an excellent writeup of the “elusive” FP3 Art Gallery on MySecretBoston.com. In it, the author discusses how the rejuvenation of Boston’s Seaport District neighborhood has been criticized for displacing artists who enjoyed the cheap rent available in Fort Point Boston. But the up-and-coming neighborhood is the first to embrace art, as the developers of FP3 have given the artists their own art gallery space.

However, this gallery’s first floor is open to the public, and many people just don’t know it’s there. On mysecretboston.com, there is a great writeup of this “secret” FP3 gallery, which presents rotating exhibitions by artists such as Fort Point artist Quentin Kelley – who specializes in creating reclaimed-wood benches.

The FP3 complex developers include Boston architect David Hacin and the preeminent chef Barbara Lynch, whose Menton and Sportello restaurants are housed in the building.

The FP3 Gallery is accessible by T – it is located on the Silver Line’s Courthouse stop, and the Red Line’s South Station stop.

Our latest artist exhibition opens today! Entitled “Landscapes – Real, Imagined and Experienced” features new works by local artist José L. Santos. His latest collection of work at the exclusive FP3 Gallery is a series of landscapes and mixed-media inspired by living in the heart of the city and spending time immersed in nature. His techniques and materials are as varied as each individual piece, which makes for an eclectic, yet invitingly accessible exhibit.

Santos currently resides in the vibrant artist community at the Artist Building at 300 Summer Street in Boston, Ma where he finds much of his creative inspiration and hones his craft. In addition, he is a high school art educator in the Somerville public Schools. He received his Bachelors of Fine Arts and Masters of Science in Art Education from Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston. Over the years, he has been part of numerous solo and group art exhibitions. And in 2004, the Fogg Art Museum in Cambridge, Ma purchased three of his pieces for its permanent collection.

With such a creative background and amazing pieces of work, Santos’ “Landsapes – Real, Imagined and Experienced” exhibit is certainly one to behold. You don’t want to miss out on this limited showcase, and afterwards be sure to check out some of the other finer amenities that FP3 has to offer, such as our very own Barbara Lynch Italian restaurant, Sportello, located on the ground floor here at FP3, or the stylish bar, Drink!
