Innovation District Draws High-Tech Jobs To FP3′s Doorstep
Mayor Menino’s branding of the South Boston Waterfront as the new “Innovation District” is paying dividends for the Fort Point neighborhood, according to a recent Boston Globe article. The past two years have seen 3,000 new jobs at 100 firms come to the district spanning areas of the Fort Point, Channel Center, Liberty Wharf, Fan Pier, and the Leather and Financial districts.

Phillip Spinks Exhibition at the FP3 Art Gallery!

Our next show at The FP3 Gallery welcomes local South End artist, Phillip Spinks. His show opens on January 18th, and a reception with the artist will take place on Thursday, February 2nd, from 6-8pm in The FP3 Gallery at FP3 Boston.
Phillip is best known for his abstract multi-layered paintings and has most recently found inspiration in what is lost or has been destroyed only to create new meaning in what remains. Hurricane Katrina, for example, has played a moving and inspirational influence on his recent work. Other influences are distilled from his sense of self, based on a southern heritage enhanced by his many travels and the cultures both urban and rural, which he has encountered. This history invoked with a vivid imagination creates images hauntingly surreal, yet vaguely familiar in the recesses of our primal memories.

Phillip Spinks was born in Nurnburg, West Germany in 1972, and he has lived throughout the United States and Europe, from the mountainous deserts of the southwest to the Mississippi Gulf Coast and from deep in the Bavarian forests to Colonial New England. He studied engineering, creative writing and archaeology at Boston University.
He’s been a painter and printmaker living and working in Boston for more than ten years. He has his work in many public and private collections such as Merck & Co., Children’s Hospital and the Beal Corporation, and he’s been in numerous juried exhibitions and has shown throughout the United States and Germany.
His current body of work is about taking what is lost or destroyed and creating new meanings as well as anchoring what remains.
On August 29, 2005 Hurricane Katrina struck both New Orleans and the Mississippi Gulf coast. His parents’ and his grandmother’s homes were gutted by the storm surge of Katrina. Anything below three and a half feet was buried in sediment and debris. Ninety percent of his family photographs were completely destroyed. As his parents and he sifted through what was left of their home, they found items of their recent past. Broken china, splintered chairs, clothing and images lost in frames, melted by the ravages of the storm. What remained were fragments of memories, a face here, an arm draped over a shoulder, the edge of a building.
After smell, sight is the strongest sense linked to memory. Looking through photo albums and frames, the images both lost their meaning and sparked moments in times remembered.
He saw the austere beauty in the imagery that remained, and as opposed to allowing the loss of the images to create a void in his mind, he chose to reclaim these memories and create a new vehicle to contain them. This body of work is titled Recovering Memories.
Trade at Atlantic Wharf: New Restaurant by Celebrity Chef Jody Adams
Everyone knows that the Fort Point Neighborhood in Boston’s Seaport District is getting more desirable by the minute, and here is just one more sign. Jody Adams, renowned chef, restauranteur, author, world traveler, and contestent on Top Chef Masters, will soon be opening a new restaurant in the area
, ”Trade at Atlantic Wharf.” The restaurant will feature Mediterranean fare influenced heavily by Spanish, Italian, and Greek cuisine. The dinner menu will include items such as roast chicken marinated in lemon, slow-cooked stuffed pork and braised beef short ribs, and grilled bluefish priced from $23 to $30.
This is certainly not Adams’ debut in Boston. Her restaurant, Rialto, located in Cambridge, is a perennial favorite and has received praise in both Gourmet and Food and Wine magazines.
The highly anticipated ”Trade at Atlantic Wharf” will add to the increasingly sophisticated allure of the Seaport District. The area’s posh and casual restaurants and nightlife have made it Boston’s coolest places to life. Boston Waterfront Continues to Expand…
More developments are on the way for the Boston Waterfront that will continue to tran
sform the neighborhood around FP3 into the hottest spot in town.
Construction is set to begin on Pier 4 next year to draw more activity to the Waterfront with the addition of a 21-story tower that will boast 357 apartments, retail stores and an underground parking garage near the Institute of Contemporary Art.
Already new restaurants and bars at Liberty Wharf are generating lines out the door. And although the historical restaurant Anthony’s will be taken down, it may reopen again on the property in the future.

FP3 Architect to Design Innovation Center at Seaport Square
Boston Mayor Thomas Menino recently announced initiatives to attract more venture-backed firms to the waterfront and to encourage developments to accommodate solar power. At the same time, developer John B. Hynes III announced that he has hired architects to design two residential towers on Seaport Boulevard in addition to a 12,000 square foot, one-story development which will contain an “innovation center” to promote collaboration between new firms in the increasingly popular waterfront area.
Design for the innovation center at Seaport Square will be directed by the architecture firm Hacin & Associates Inc. Hacin was responsible for the award winning design of our FP3 luxury waterfront condos. The two 20-story residential towers, containing 300,000 square feet, will be designed by Elkus Manfredi Architects, who also call Fort Point home. Elkus Manfredi is very active in this area; they are designing the adjacent Fan Pier development by Joseph Fallon and recently completed the new Liberty Wharf, a development of restaurants and offices farther down Northern Avenue.
“We find ourselves in the position of rolling out a substantial amount of activity at Seaport Square to begin satisfying the various components that will make up and enhance the innovation district,’’ Hynes said in a statement. The three building development is part of a more extensive development project in the area which will ultimately include several offices, store fronts, and hundreds of homes. Although an exact date hasn’t been set for construction to begin, hopes are that ground will be broken soon after the submission of final design plans to city regulators in September.
